Abstract
In this paper, we describe two experiments examining the role of language in human reinforcement learning. The first experiment presents evidence that people are more accurate and faster at learning to discern relevant features of a task when candidate features are easier to name. The second experiment shows that people are more efficient at learning what actions to take in a given state when states have more compact verbal labels, an effect that was especially pronounced in environments with more states. These results highlight a strong and direct effect of language on how humans represent the environment when learning from trial and error.
